Gyeongsangbuk-do (Governor Lee Cheol-woo) held an awarding ceremony for the companies, cities, and counties that played a significant role in job creation and in stimulating the local economy through investments on December 19 at the Provincial Multipurpose Hall.
A total of 7 companies were honored with the Gyeongsangbuk-do Investment Attraction Award this year: SK Specialty (Yeongju-si) received the Grand Award, Daeyoung Electrics (Gyeongsan-si) received the Excellence Award, and Bobaek C&S (Gumi-si), EcoPro Innovation (Pohang-si), Dongcheonsu (Sangju-si), Dongwon Technology (Gimcheon-si), and Taedong Tech Co., Ltd. (Gimcheon-si) received the Special Awards.
SK Specialty, the recipient of the Grand Award in the corporate category, specializes in producing and selling specialty gases for semiconductors and display panels. In July, they entered into a KRW 500 billion investment memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Yeongju-si to construct and enlarge a manufacturing facility for new materials used in semiconductor displays. SK Specialty holds the global top spot in the production and market share of specialty gases (such as NF3 and WF6) used in semiconductor and display panel manufacturing. The company has made significant investments in the Gaheung General Industrial Complex and SK Specialty General Industrial Complex in Yeongju-si, leading to both direct and indirect job creation and local financial growth.
Daeyoung Electrics, the winner of the Excellence Award, started as a manufacturer of internal combustion engine parts in Gyeongsan-si and branched into the automotive electronics sector (LED lighting) in 2016, successfully expanding its business. By venturing into the electric vehicle motor core field, a key area in the future automobile industry, they are setting the stage to become a global auto parts company. In October 2023, the company made an investment worth KRW 89 billion in the 4th General Industrial Complex in Gyeongsan-si and is planning an additional facility investment of KRW 40 billion by the end of 2025.
Furthermore, Bobaek C&S, another Excellence Award winner, entered a KRW 100 billion investment MOU with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi-si this year, focusing on the development and large-scale production of insulation materials for secondary batteries. By the first half of 2023, Bobaek C&S has committed KRW 30 billion toward expanding and upgrading facilities at their Gumi-si factory. In the rapidly growing global secondary battery market, the company is targeting the global electric vehicle market by developing various products including battery protection insulation and cells to prevent electric vehicle battery short circuit explosion accidents.
EcoPro Innovation, based in Pohang-si, holds a patent for lithium hydroxide manufacturing technology and a method for extracting and reclaiming lithium and valuable metals from waste electrode materials, which are crucial advancements in the secondary battery industry. The company has successfully started the domestic production of lithium raw materials, which were previously imported. EcoPro Innovation signed an MOU valued at KRW 73 billion in 2020, completing its investments. Additionally, plans are in place for further investment of around KRW 380 billion in the Blue Valley National Industrial Complex in the coming period.
Dongcheonsu, the recipient of the special award and a member of the Dong-A Socio Holdings Group, began in the bottled water industry by taking over an existing manufacturer and later branched into the carbonated water business. The company solidified its expansion plans by signing a KRW 52 billion investment MOU with Sangju-si in 2021. In October 2023, the completion of its third factory at the Dongcheonsu Sangju Campus marked a significant step in its growth, aligning it as a key representative company of Sangju-si.
Dongwon Technology, known for producing automotive air conditioning parts and supplying them to Hanon Systems, Bosch Electrical Drives, and KB AutoTech, has also been a key producer and supplier of automotive headlamp parts for Hyundai Mobis since 2011. The company reinforced its commitment by signing an investment MOU and completing a KRW 13 billion investment to expand its Gimcheon factory. This expansion has boosted the local economy by creating 44 new jobs to date.
In addition, Taedong Tech, known for manufacturing and exporting panel products for car interiors like navigation and audio systems, signed a KRW 15.8 billion MOU with Gimcheon-si in 2021 to expand the Gimcheon plant. It has also commercialized a new panel material film using nano-coating technology and started its mass production and its injection products at the newly completed Gimcheon-si plant. The company is diversifying its business by developing products with nano-coating technology, aligning with the trends of the global electric vehicle market and eco-friendly initiatives.
The Grand Awards for the si/gun local government sector were given to Pohang-si, Yeongcheon-si, and Uiseong-gun, which successfully made an impressive investment achievement of KRW 8.9 trillion this year. They attracted investment from leading companies in the secondary battery sector such as CNGR, Huayu Cobalt, POSCO Future M, and EcoPro and actively resolved corporate difficulties. Gumi-si and Goryeong-gun were awarded Excellence Awards, and Yeongju-si and Yecheon-gun were awarded Encouragement Awards.
The Grand Awards in the public official category were awarded to Pohang-si and Gumi-si, and two Excellence Awards and two Encouragement Awards were given.
Gyeongsangbuk-do succeeded in attracting KRW 14.1802 trillion in investments and creating 9,807 new jobs this year. This year saw significant investments, particularly in the fields of secondary batteries and semiconductors, which are key to Korea’s future growth. For instance, SK siltron in semiconductor wafers committed KRW 1.2 trillion; POSCO Future M & Huayu Cobalt in nickel refining, KRW 1.2 trillion; and EcoPro in secondary battery cathode materials, KRW 2.5 trillion. Along with these major investments, there was active involvement with small- and medium-sized partner companies, laying a solid foundation for revitalizing the local economy that had been stagnant for some time.
Governor Lee said, “Despite difficult economic conditions at home and abroad, including the Russia-Ukraine War and a period of high inflation, Gyeongsangbuk-do achieved significant outcomes this year. It was designated as a specialized complex for secondary batteries and semiconductors and was chosen as a potential site for new national industrial complexes in areas like Andong-si (Bio Life Science), Gyeongju-si (SMR), and Uljin-gun (Nuclear Hydrogen). These achievements were possible because of the strong commitment and efforts of investment company leaders, employees, and city and county officials. “We will continue to provide administrative and financial support to ensure that Gyeongsangbuk-do can grow together with companies by creating a business-friendly environment so that more globally competitive companies in future high-tech industries such as secondary batteries can invest in Gyeongsangbuk-do.”
