Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi-si attracted a leading company in next-generation power semiconductor technology for the first time since the designation of the “Gumi Semiconductor Specialized Complex” last July, further solidifying the semiconductor industry supply chain and integrating related industries.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on December 12 at GumiCo, primarily aimed at establishing gallium nitride (GaN)-based power semiconductor production facilities. This event was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Deputy Governor of Economy Lee Dal-hee, Gumi-si Mayor Kim Jang-ho, and A-PRO Semicon CEO Lim Jong-hyun.
Under this investment agreement, A-PRO Semicon will relocate its Gwangju headquarters to Gumi-si by 2024, investing more than KRW 60 billion and creating more than 20 new jobs. The company plans to produce GaN-based power semiconductor epiwafers and supply equipment for charging and discharging secondary batteries.
Epiwafers, a key component of GaN-based semiconductors, have traditionally been imported, but A-PRO Semicon introduced Korea’s first MOCVD (8-inch GaN power semiconductor epiwafer production equipment) in 2021, setting up a domestic production system. This development has boosted the productivity and cost-competitiveness of their GaN power semiconductors, meeting all the quality, uniformity, and yield standards required by semiconductor foundries.
A-PRO Semicon was founded in 2020 as a spin-off of the semiconductor division of secondary battery equipment company A-PRO. Initially focused on developing power semiconductors for A-PRO’s secondary battery equipment, the company has since branched out into markets for mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), and compact devices, including home appliances.
GaN-based semiconductors are attracting attention as a next-generation power semiconductor material because of their superior high-voltage and high-heat resistance compared to silicon semiconductors.
With this investment, the company plans to acquire 2 MOCVD facilities from the German semiconductor equipment firm Aixtron and expand its annual GaN epiwafer production capacity to 20,000 units by 2025.
This agreement holds particular significance as it represents the first successful effort to attract companies with core next-generation semiconductor technologies since the designation of the Gumi Semiconductor Specialized Complex.
Gyeongsangbuk-do is actively working to sustain a significant lead in the semiconductor industry by engaging in national strategic research and development, cultivating semiconductor experts, and establishing an ecosystem for semiconductor materials and components.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Deputy Governor of Economy Lee Dal-hee remarked, “This investment, coupled with the designation of Gumi-si as a semiconductor specialized complex, aims to attract globally competitive companies to Gumi. With A-PRO Semicon’s investment in power semiconductors, we aim to establish a semiconductor ecosystem with further investments from related industries in Gumi and offer robust administrative and financial support to facilitate the successful establishment of companies in Gumi.”
