Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on December 6 that it was selected as a distinguished local government for investment attraction at the 2023 Local Investment Academy, an event organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE). As an incentive for being a distinguished local government, the government will enhance the matching ratio for local investment promotion subsidies in 2024 to a 5% higher subsidy compared to other local governments.
MOTIE conducts an in-depth uation of the investment attraction efforts, achievements, management, and satisfaction levels of 14 metropolitan local governments outside the Seoul Metropolitan Area, and Gyeongsanbuk-do was selected as a distinguished local government for two consecutive years.
An official from Gyeongsangbuk-do stated that after their selection last year, the region reduced local expenses by about KRW 3 billion this year. They also provided KRW 33.4 billion in local investment promotion subsidies to 9 companies, attracting KRW 242.7 billion in actual investments and leading to 387 new hires.
The local investment promotion subsidy is designed to stimulate balanced national development by encouraging company investments in local areas. This subsidy offers a specific portion, ranging from 3% to 50%, of the invested amount to businesses that either relocate to or establish new or expanded facilities in the local region.
From 2024, distinguished local governments like Gyeongsangbuk-do will receive a 10% increase in the national subsidy rate for basic local governments in balanced development subregions*.

It is expected to boost the local economy by drawing in anchor companies, helping to address the investment attraction disparity, particularly in the northern regions of Gyeongbuk.
Hwang Jung-ha, head of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Investment Promotion Office, said, “Amid Gyeongsangbuk-do’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, which includes two specialized complexes for secondary batteries and semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment, and three potential national industrial complex sites, our consecutive recognition as a distinguished local government for investment attraction signifies the effectiveness of our investment strategies.” Expressing gratitude toward the companies that chose to invest in Gyeongbuk during challenging times, he continued, “We are committed to resolving corporate challenges to ensure their stable establishment in the region.”
