Gyeongsangbuk-do (Governor Lee Cheol-woo) and Goryeong-gun signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. (KOMIPO) for the development of an eco-friendly clean energy power plant throughout Goryeong-gun on December 5 at K Library of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Office.
The signing ceremony was attended by 15 people, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Goryeong-gun Mayor Lee Nam-cheol, Goryeong-gun Council Chairman Kim Myeong-guk, KOMIPO CEO Kim Ho-bin, provincial council members, and related public officials and business officials. They agreed on collaborative efforts in investment and administrative support for the clean energy power plant and other power generation facilities.
This agreement will see the construction of a 500 MW LNG combined cycle power plant in Seongsan-myeon, Goryeong-gun, covering approximately 40,000 pyeong and capable of powering over 250,000 households, with a total investment of KRW 800 billion.
The proposed site, already adjacent to a substation, eliminates the need for new transmission towers and lines, thereby minimizing environmental impact. Its proximity to the Nakdonggang River also positions it as an ideal location for water supply.
With the power plant, Goryeong-gun anticipates a boost in local finances of about KRW 88.7 billion during its construction and operation, as per the Act on Assistance to Electric Power Plants-Neighboring Areas. This will open up opportunities for local construction-related businesses and lead to an influx of around 200 workers, including those from partner companies, increasing population and invigorating the local economy.
KOMIPO, responsible for about 8% of the nation's electricity supply, is conducting a feasibility study for the new eco-friendly clean energy power plant, in line with the government’s Basic Plan of Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand. Gyeongsangbuk-do and Goryeong-gun will provide the necessary administrative support for the success of the project.
Moving forward, Gyeongsangbuk-do is set to enhance the development of existing eco-friendly energy industrial complexes to achieve carbon neutrality and continue to provide and support clean energy to stabilize supply and address new trade barriers.
Governor Lee stated, “This investment establishes Gyeongsangbuk-do, with half of the country’s nuclear power plants, as a key contributor to the government's eco-friendly energy transition policy. We're committed to working with Goryeong-gun to create local jobs and provide hope to areas facing population decline.”
