Toray Advanced Materials Korea held the groundbreaking ceremony for its Carbon Fiber Unit 3 at its 4th plant in Gumi National Industrial Complex 4 in Gyeongsangbuk-do on October 23, 2023 (Monday).
The ceremony had around 200 attendees, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Toray Chairman Akihiro Nikkaku, Toray President Mitsuo Ohya, Trade, Industry and Energy Deputy Trade Minister Yang Byeong-nae, Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho, provincial council members, and other Toray executives and staff.
Toray plans to construct a factory at its 4th plant to produce ultrahigh carbon fibers for application in high-tech industries such as high-pressure hydrogen pressure vessels and urban air mobility, aiming for operation within the second half of 2025. The new Unit 3 represents an upgraded line of existing Units 1 and 2, helping the company secure a total production capacity of 8,000 tons at its Gumi plant.
In particular, carbon fibers that will be produced in the expanded line are based on high-end new technologies and are expected to be used as key materials in the eco-friendly hydrogen car and renewable energy markets to establish a supply system for the key components of eco-friendly vehicles. This material is set to be widely used in high-tech industries and is anticipated to contribute to the development of the domestic hydrogen car industry, as well as future cars.
Toray has been leading the development of domestic and international carbon fiber industries and the mutual growth of the upstream and downstream industries, with an annual production capacity of 4,700 tons. In addition to carbon fibers, Toray produces polyester films, IT films, water treatment filters, spunbond nonwoven fabrics, raw cotton, yarn, and aramid fibers, creating jobs in the local community. As a prominent foreign investment company in Korea, Toray operates with 5 plants and about 1,800 employees in the Gumi National Industrial Complex alone.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo said, “While celebrating the new carbon fiber unit of Toray, which has built a solid, win-win relationship with the region based on trust, the provincial government will actively support the high-tech carbon fiber business, a future growth engine, to foster continuous growth in both domestic and global markets.”
