Gyeongsangbuk-do (Governor Lee Cheol-woo) held the “Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Investment Attraction Briefing Session for Companies in the Metropolitan Area” at the National Assembly Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, on September 20. The event was attended by around 150 officials, including CEOs of various companies in the metropolitan area.
By introducing some incentives to industrial complexes selected by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, such as the Special Complexes for Advanced Strategic Industries (Pohang - secondary battery; Gumi - semiconductor), New National Industrial Complex (Gyeongju -– small modular reactor (SMR); Andong - biotechnology; Uljin - nuclear hydrogen), and Defense Industry Innovation Cluster (Gumi), along with unlimited investment subsidies, the briefing session paved the way for attracting investment interests in Gyeongsangbuk-do from companies considering relocation to the province.
This announcement showcased Gyeongsangbuk-do’s vision for the investment environment, aligned with the anticipated opening of a new airport in 2030 and prominent national high-tech industries in the region. In particular, some advantages, such as the lowest electricity rate in Korea, based on the Special Act on the Promotion of Distributed Energy recently enacted, and a special case system of the Opportunity and Development Zone under the Special Act on Promotion of Local Investment proposed to the National Assembly, attracted massive attention from participating business representatives.
It was followed by a session introducing an example of the best investment practices in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and an official from AJU Steel Co., Ltd. in Gumi explained the reason for investing in the province and the process of receiving support from the perspective of an entrepreneur. He highlighted that “we have made four investments since 2011, thanks to the affordable business investment sites provided by Gyeongsangbuk-do and the efficient handling of administrative procedures.” Addressing entrepreneurs in attendance, he said, “I strongly recommend investing in Gyeongsangbuk-do for its business-friendly collaboration and support throughout the entire investment process.”
Detailed presentations on investment incentives and development plans for Pohang Secondary Battery Cathode Materials Industry Specialized Complex, Gyeongju SMR National Industrial Complex, Andong Biotechnology National Industrial Complex, Gumi Semiconductor Core Material/Parts Specialized Complex, Defense Industry Innovation Cluster, and Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industry Complex. The session provided an opportunity for companies considering relocation to consult on specific details. The extensive discussion, fueled by questions from company representatives regarding detailed information about moving into industrial complexes and subsidy availability, exceeded the scheduled time and received favorable responses.
Kim Hak-hong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Vice Governor for Public Administration, told the participating companies that “Gyeongsangbuk-do is the biggest beneficiary of business-friendly deregulation and government efforts to establish a foundation for investment. We are committed to making every effort to play a significant role in high-tech industries critical for Korea’s future. We also aim to provide the nation’s best investment infrastructure and support for companies relocating to settle in seamlessly.”
Gyeongsangbuk-do has demonstrated exceptional investment attraction performance of over KRW 15 trillion by August 2023 following the inauguration of the 8th popular election, the outcome of the large-scale attraction of anchor companies in high-tech industries such as secondary batteries and semiconductors at home and abroad. The results prove the effectiveness of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s strategy, which analyzed industry trends and focused on attracting investments from promising fields and overseas companies.
