Gyeongsangbuk-do and Sangju will pave the way for the further expansion of the secondary battery material value chain to the city of Sangju and integrate related industries while drawing investment from SebitChem, a total solutions company for secondary battery recycling.
The two parties announced they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for investment in the construction of a lithium carbonate production plant for secondary batteries on the 18th in the presence of Gyeongsangbuk-do Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Lee Dal-hee, Sangju Mayor Kang Young-seok, and SebitChem CEO Park Min-gyu.
Under this MOU, SebitChem will invest about KRW 50 billion into Sangju General Industrial Complex by 2036 to construct a plant dedicated to producing lithium carbonate for secondary batteries, fostering the creation of 100 new jobs in the region.
Founded in 1993, SebitChem started as a recycling business, addressing wastewater treatment drugs and liquid waste from the electronics industry before venturing into the secondary battery recycling business in 2017.
Having achieved listing on the KOSDAQ in August 2022, SebitChem has become a key enterprise that provides total solutions in the field of recycling, including urban mining, which separates core resources of cathode materials for secondary batteries in an environmentally friendly way and creates a sustainable cycle.
SebitChem plans to construct a plant for lithium carbonate, a crucial material for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), in Sangju, following a prior investment in composite precursor solution in Gimcheon last January. Lithium carbonate produced by SebitChem is gaining attention for its high purity and particle size.
Meanwhile, Gyeongsangbuk-do seeks to establish a comprehensive resource circulating system (closed loop) covering the entire spectrum, from the production of secondary battery materials to the recycling of core resources, alongside key industry players in secondary battery materials, namely, ECOPRO, POSCO FUTURE M, and SK Materials Group 14.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Lee Dal-hee said, “This investment is significant as it shows the expansion of the secondary battery industry, which is gaining substantial attraction in Gyeongsangbuk-do.” He added, “We are deeply grateful to CEO Park Min-gyu for making this huge investment in Sangju after doing the same in Gimcheon, and we will make active efforts to foster a national secondary battery recycling material industry that connects Sangju, Gimcheon, and Gumi in the future.”
