Baro Market’s Gyeongsangbuk-do Branch (hereinafter referred to as Baro Market), one of the best-known farmers’ markets in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region, opened on April 9 at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Resources Management Center in Buk-gu, Daegu.

Gyeongsangbuk-do announced the Baro Market will open every Saturday and Sunday from April 9 to December 4. Baro Market is expected to help both consumers and farmers buy and sell agricultural products directly without an intermediary throughout the year.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Resources Management Center, where Baro Market is located, is offering a site that is roughly 3,300m2 in size and has a population of 200,000 within a 3km radius.

Last year, Baro Market helped Gyeongsangbuk-do sell its excellent agricultural products despite the ongoing threat of COVID-19. It earned KRW 2.7 billion in sales and attracted more than 100,000 customers.

This years Baro Market is offering more than 300 different kinds of various agricultural products produced and processed by more than 100 farms and organizations in the Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu-si region, and thanks to its direct trading platform, Baro Market is offering products at 10% or more cheaper prices than the retail price.

Also, Baro Market has a customer mileage system in which 5% of the purchase price is added as mlies (or points), and a special discount offer that makes products 30% cheaper than the retail price.

The opening ceremony featured a variety of events, including a free flower giveaway event by the Gyeongbuk Flower Producers Association to promote flower consumption, a free premium rice giveaway event and a rice cake making event by the Gyeongsangbuk-do branch of the Korea Rice Pro-Farmer Federation, a special promotional sales event for local specialties such as oriental melons produced in Seongju and strawberries produced in Goryeong, and a lucky draw for customers at the Baro Market.

This year, Baro Market’s Gyeongsangbuk-do branch will host 72 market days, with a target sales of KRW 3 billion from 120,000 visitors. It will give customers an opportunity to purchase high-quality and safe local produce, while also giving them a chance to enjoy the generosity of local farmers selling their products at the Market.

In particular, this year, Lotte GRS, an affiliated organization, will open a second store for the Baro Market store at Angel-in-us Island branch, a large coffee shop operated near Suseongmot Lake in Daegu, to promote cooperation between local businesses and the agriculture sector.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo said, The reason Baro Market is establishing itself as a popular local attraction is that it has managed to earn the trust of consumers, which has led to an increase of regular customers coming back to Baro Market for a more diverse range of quality diverse products at cheaper prices and various events for customers. Governor Lee added, We hope to tailor Baro Market to the Gyeongsangbuk-do region and develop it into a market that blends the advantages of a traditional market, which offers generous portions at low prices, and a large supermarket, which is much more convenient to shop for customers.
