With COVID-19 evolving into more of an endemic disease, demand for domestic tourism is surging, and Gyeongsangbuk-do is attracting plenty of attention from potential travelers by launching a series of HI STORY Gyeongbuk regional tourism products designed to revitalize the infrastructure across its three major spheres of culture.

The Provincial Government is set to offer regional tourism products developed as part of the Luxury Wellness Tour initiative to link one of its major cultural spheres - the historical Gaya sphere – and connect Gayasan Mountain in Seongju-gun to other nearby cities, including Gimcheon and Goryeong.

Using these new programs, Gyeongsangbuk-do will complement the strengths of local tourism resources, offer various immersive programs to visitors, extend the itinerary of potential tourists, and increase the time people spend within the Province to create what it calls a collaborative consumption cycle.

Also, to attract tourists from the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do metropolitan region, the Gyeonsangbuk-do has created ten distinctly-themed tourist trains centered on cycling, traditional liquor, and rural activities.

Given the gradual rise in demand across online tourism product platforms for these unique experiences that are exclusive to a particular local area and different from what people can expect from urban environments, it appears consumers are looking for more of these uniquely local products.

Meanwhile, the Gugak and Wine Train, which departed for its first trial run on May 31, left Seoul Station and made its way to Gimcheon and Seongju. Passengers were served wine on the train, which helped build anticipation for their trip to famous local attractions and eateries across Gyeongsangbuk-do.

The Provincial Government will take in user feedback from these trial runs to revise parts that need improving and invite local businesses to join the program.

Gyeongsangbuk-do also has tourism products that satisfy all five senses of travelers buying day trip tickets to the Daegu and Gyeongsangnam-do region, including, first of all, the Gayasan Mountain forest healing (meditation, trekking, etc.) program, and the Seongjuho Lake Water Splash featuring leisure activities in Seongjuho Lake, Gayasan Mountain Forest Picnic program, and Farm Party & Busking programs in combination with immersive agricultural programs.

Going forward, Gyeongsangbuk-do has additional plans to offer a wide range of immersive tourism products such as Wellness Stay and Gayasan Forest Salon.

Meanwhile, amid changes to the domestic tourism consumption market between 2008, when the three major cultural spheres project was first conceived, and 2020, when related infrastructure facilities began opening to the public in earnest, travel has become commonplace among consumers, which has led to more diverse demand. However, the need to develop new tourism products that can satisfy a broader range of individual needs started growing at a much more rapid pace since the pandemic, therefore bringing a major shift in travel and tourism services.

To this end, Gyeongsangbuk-do is promoting various regional tourism products and immersive programs using the brand HI STORY Gyeongbuk_Continue Your Story in Gyeongsangbuk-do to stimulate the infrastructure across cities and counties that belong to the three major cultural spheres of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Specifically, these programs include the Seonseonghyeon Cultural Complex & Korean Culture Theme Park project in Andong, the development and management of pre-opening boom-up and immersive programs for Sunbee World in Yeongju, the Yeomyeong healing center focusing on culture and art in Yeongdeok, the Jang Gye-hyang Cultural Experience Training Center in Yeongyang, and the Wellness Cluster Specialization Project in connection with the Geumgangsong Ecorium Uljin.

Gyeongsangbuk-do also has plans to unveil strategies tailored to the characteristics of the infrastructure available in each region, such as the Rala Festival (June ~ October) designed to help establish an Eco Rala Youth Community in Mungyeong, and an immersive four seasons-themed program at the Daegaya Living Zone in Goryeong (April ~ December).

Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Director of Culture, Tourism and Sports said, To meet the recent increase in demand for domestic tourism, we are looking to develop a new model for regional tourism utilizing the infrastructure of our three major cultural spheres. The Director added, We will do our best to raise public awareness of each product available in our cities and counties with a Provincial-level branding and joint-marketing initiative for tourism products so that they can become a turning point for our local tourism industries.
