Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday (April 26) said that his ministry will soon establish a task force to map out measures to protect Dokdo from Japans attempts to violate South Koreas territorial sovereignty.
He also warned that Seoul will sternly deal with Japans improper challenges to Korean sovereignty such as Japans failed attempts to conduct maritime surveys in waters near Dokdo.
The government will take necessary measures to internationally publicize Koreas sovereignty over Dokdo and intensify its rule over the island, Ban said at a weekly press briefing in Seoul.
A day earlier, Roh had said that Dokdo was a symbol of the complete restoration of sovereignty from Japans 1910-45 colonial rule and Japans claim to Dokdo is an act that denies Koreas liberation and independence.
Ban expressed strong regret Japanese politicians had disregarded President Roh Moo-hyuns speech, seeing it as designed to win public support.
It is regrettable to see some Japanese leaders wrongly interpreting the presidents speech as targeting domestic audiences even though the speech includes Japans incorrect claim to Dokdo and recent provocative actions as its background, he said.
Ban repeated Rohs remarks, saying that Dokdo is not just a territorial issue with South Koreans but rather a subject that makes the government publicly and justly cope with correcting Japans wrong interpretation of the history.
Japanese politicians disregard of the presidential speech was unreasonable, he said. We hope the speech has provided the Japanese with an opportunity to open their eyes about what Dokdo means to Koreans historically.
In a way to repair the damaged bilateral relations, Minister Ban said Japanese leaders should humbly reflect upon their recent conduct, such as repeated visits to a war shrine in Tokyo, distortion of history textbooks and more recently the plan to conduct maritime
