Gyeongsangbuk-do hosted the 2023 Gyeongsangbuk-do Agri-food Export Conference at the Andong Grand Hotel on June 8. It invited more than 400 agricultural and food exporters as well as Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council Agriculture and Fisheries Committee Chairperson, Mayors and County Governors, representatives from other related organizations, overseas buyers, and exporters.

At the Conference, Gyeongsangbuk-do rewarded Si/Gun municipal governments, public officials in charge of exporting duties, and major exporters who led the way in helping the Province achieve a record-high of USD 824 million (approximately KRW 1.1 trillion) in agricultural and food exports last year. Gyeongsangbuk-do also renewed its commitment to produce and export world-best agricultural products to continue the upward trajectory for K-foods overseas.

Among the Si/Gun municipal governments rewarded at the Conference was Gimcheon-si, which was praised for its contributions in terms of producing more than 80% of high-quality grapes exported last year from Korea. The City won the Gold Prize for Agri-food Export Policies.

Meanwhile, the Silver Prize went to Pohang-si and Sangju-si. Pohang-si managed to diversify its export portfolio with chives, green onions, and Chinese cabbage, and successfully targeted a specific niche market in Taiwan for summer radishes, whereas Sangju-si enjoyed some remarkable success exporting premium fruits such as pears, strawberries, and peaches. The Bronze Prize went to Yeongju-si, Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsan-si, Uiseong-gun, and Yecheon-gun.

Five home-grown companies, including Heechang Trading, which pioneered the US agri-food market for Korean companies, and Millfun Corp., which has been leading the way in popularizing Andong Soju overseas, received commendations for their excellence as exporters from Gyeongsangbuk-do.

As for the consulting fair organized to help prospective exporters at the Conference, twelve potential buyers from nine different countries, including the US, Canada, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, were invited to sit down and talk 1-on-1 with representatives from 55 local producers.

The Conference also shared information on programs designed to stimulate agri-food exports with exporters and industrial clusters specializing in agricultural and food products, and it gave participants a chance to explore (consult) new ways of expanding their exports of fresh agricultural produce.

Meanwhile, although exports have taken a hit due to the recent downturn in economic conditions, Gyeongsangbuk-do managed to export USD 385 million (approximately KRW 500 billion) in agri-food products as of the end of May, which was an increase of 4.5% compared to the same period last year. This year, overall, agri-food exports are expected to sail past KRW 1 trillion.

In fact, annual agri-food exports out of Gyeongsangbuk-do have been growing steadily, going from USD 522 million in 2017, to USD 673 million in 2021, and USD 824 million last year. The goal for this year was set at USD 900 million.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo said, The way everyone from our agricultural and food exporters worked together helped Gyeongsangbuk-do usher in a new era of more than KRW 1 trillion in agri-food exports. He added, Agricultural and food exporters are injecting new life into rural areas, and they are also leading the way in decentralizing the economy of Korea. My administration will pull its weight behind our agri-food industry to help local companies produce high value-adding products, so Gyeongsangbuk-do’s agri-food products can lead the way in making K-food a popular trend around the world.
