- 28th Marine Day celebrations get underway at Gyeongju Expo Grand Park -

On May 31, Gyeongsangbuk-do hosted the 28th Marine Day inside the Baekgyeol Performance Stage at Gyeongju Expo Grand Park. This year’s event focused on Innovating our marine industry, growing our marine economy, and Korea working together as one.

Declared a national memorial day back in 1996 to celebrate the new UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Marine Day (annual, May 31) shares the importance of our marine environment, and inspires people to explore our oceans with a more enterprising spirit.

Various events get underway every year to celebrate Marine Day in Korea, and to give people working in and around the maritime and fisheries industries a chance to enjoy their proud achievements.

This year’s event was attended by more than 1,500 guests, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Cho Seung-hwan, maritime and fisheries industry officials, and members of the marine and fisheries industries. After a pre-ceremony event featuring performances delivered by the Navy Military Band and Gyeongju-si Municipal Choir, the main event continued with congratulatory videos from both Korea and abroad, commemorative speeches, and other performances.

At the award ceremony, specifically for those who contributed to the development of the marine and fisheries industry, six individuals received medals/citations and Presidential commendations. From Gyeongsangbuk-do, Kwon Jeong-hoon, the former President of the Gyeongju Federation of Advanced Fisheries Leader, received a Presidential commendation.

Also, this year, the Korea Oceans and Fisheries Expo 2023 at the nearby Gyeongju Hwabaek International Convention Center showcased new marine businesses and industry leaders. The Expo promoted marine and fisheries products, had a hall dedicated to immersive marine and fisheries programs, and hosted tasting events for various marine products. There were other attractions as well, including a photo exhibition of female divers, a jet ski exhibition, and a special exhibition of native aquarium fish species.

We also promise to continue investing and supporting marine science research to help advance our maritime industry.
