Protect the environment and save money on your trip to Gyeongsangbuk-do!!
- Gyeongsangbuk-do and SOCAR partner up to offer 80% in discounts on shared cars!! -
- Convenient transportation options available for travelers at 11 stations, including KTX Andong, Yeongju, and Gimcheon-Gumi, across the Province -

Gyeongsangbuk-do recently announced a new partnership with SOCAR, the no. 1 car-sharing service vendor in Korea aimed at offering travelers a chance to both protect the environment and save money on their trip to the Province.

Given the rising consumer prices (up 4.2% year-on-year as of March 2023) and added pressure on working-class households stemming from higher debt, Gyeongsangbuk-do is working with SOCAR, the largest car-sharing service in Korea, to provide incentives that could induce more travelers to use shared vehicles.

Travelers heading over to the Province by train can rent a car at designated car rental locales (Socar Zones) at 11 different train stations, and receive an 80% discount on their rental fees when traveling across Gyeongsangbuk-do for at least a day (24 hours).

Early on, 205 cars will be made available in 75 Socar Zones at designated stations, but there are plans to gradually add more vehicles to the program.

Travelers planning a trip to Gyeongsangbuk-do can book a car on SOCAR’s website (www.socar.kr) or app from 10:00 am on March 5. Each discount offer extends up to five days per car rental.

In terms of stations listed for this program, although the Provincial Government will start with 11 stations, it plans on expanding the network to the Pohang-Gyeongju Station, Pohang-Gyeongju Airport, and other major transit terminals after July when the summer holiday season begins in earnest.

Gyeongsangbuk-do is promoting this shared car service program to bring in more travelers via its KTX-Eum train (Jungang Line), which opened in 2021 to haul tourists and passengers to and from the metropolitan region with better, faster access.

The number of passengers using the KTX-Eum train has gone steadily up starting with 4,281 reservations (13,000 users) in 2021 to 4,885 reservations (19,540 passengers) in 2022. In just three months of launching the initiative, the Province also depleted its budget for the year, an indicator of just how popular the project has been so far.

The Provincial Government has a major marketing campaign to make sure travelers belonging to the generation MZ, the main cluster of consumers in tourism going forward, enjoy their time in Gyeongsangbuk-do enough to return in the future. The marketing campaign includes discounts on fares and other amenities or support for travelers.

The Director of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau said, We started this year’s initiative earlier than usual to provide transportation to visitors in April when the cherry blossoms are at their peak, and when all the vibrant spring festivals get under way in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Given the extreme prices consumers have to deal with lately, we hope that we can take off some pressure with discounts on shared cars, and give young adults and those still looking for jobs a chance to travel across Gyeongsangbuk-do without having to worry about money too much.

Meanwhile, in celebration of the Visit Korea Year (2023~2024), Gyeongsangbuk-do is trying to bring in more domestic and international tourists with a variety of immersive activity programs and discounts on products, such as Gyeongsangbuk-dos traditional liquor as well as healthcare (wellness) tourism products, e-Nuri products, and incentives offered to group travelers arriving in the Province this year.
