Dokdo, Korea’s easternmost island groupKorea’s easternmost islands of Dokdo will offer their beautiful scenery to international viewers through TV programs, Gyeongsangbuk-do (Province) officials said Wednesday (Mar. 26).
The provincial government said that it plans to promote the history, geography and natural resources of Dokdo and Ulleungdo, roughly 90 kilometers northwest of Dokdo, through collaboration with world-renowned media corporations including National Geographic.
Through the project, the province will not only publicize Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo but also offer well-organized trips in and around the islands, the officials said.
A total of 16 provincial governments submitted overseas tourism marketing proposals to the central government early this year and Gyeongsangbuk-do came in second in the competition, earning 20 million won worth of financial support.
Other than the Dokdo-Ulleungdo promotion scheme, the prizewinning plan of Gyeongsangbuk-do also includes porcelain tours in Mungyeong, visits to cultural heritage sites in Gyeongju, the capital of Silla (57 B.C.-A.D. 935), and Confucian culture experience at Andong, Yeongju and Yecheon.
Dokdo is known as an eco-friendly habitat filled with a variety of indigenous birds and plants.
