The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs is holding an exhibition on Friday (July 4) to show the future of Koreas transportation transaction system.
In the press release on Thursday, the ministry said it will demonstrate the so-called one card all pass system, which enables passengers to pay fares on all kinds of public transportations -- buses, subways and trains -- with his or her transport card.
The exhibition is supported by nine transportation card system-related firms and government bodies that include Seoul National University IC Card Research Center and Korea Institute of Construction & Transportation Technology uation and Planning.
Since the Seoul Metropolitan Government introduced an d public transportation system in 2004, Seoul citizens have been using prepaid transportation cards -- Seoul Bus Card, U-pass or T-money -- that work on buses, subways and taxis.
Now T-money is accepted by all Seoul and Incheon buses, Seoul and Incheon Metropolitan Subway networks, all Cheonan and Asan city buses in Chungcheongnam-do (province), all Wonju city buses in Gangwon-do, all Andong and Pohang city buses in Gyeongsangbuk-do, all Tongyeong and Geoje city buses in Gyeongsangnam-do and all Jeju Special Self-governing Province buses.
A pre-paid transportation card for inbound overseas tourists named “Seoul Citypass Plus Card” was also introduced last year, which gives holders a 5 to 30 percent discount at around 60 locations, including museums, theaters, amusement parks and restaurants in Seoul. The card is available at convenience stores and tourist ination centers.
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs plans to further expand the card-based public transportation system to railroad ticket system and expressway ticket system nationwide next year.
