- Strengthening Nuclear Power Plant Equipment Manufacturing with a KRW 30 Billion Investment by 2028, Creating 300 Permanent Jobs
- Gyeongju City Anticipating Significant Growth in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Nuclear Industry
Soosan Industry and its subsidiary, Soosan ENS, have ed a significant investment of approximately KRW 30 billion in the Myeonggye 3rd General Industrial Complex in Gyeongju, aiming to contribute to nuclear power plant equipment manufacturing and the promotion of the small modular reactor (SMR) industry.
This investment is part of a long-term project with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), which seeks to strengthen nuclear power plant equipment manufacturing through Soosan Group’s relocation to Gyeongju and the establishment of new facilities.
The investment period is expected to span from 2024 to 2028, creating about 300 jobs in the Gyeongju area.
As the only domestic manufacturers of safety-grade control devices (programmable logic controllers or PLCs), Soosan Industry and Soosan ENS possess exceptional expertise in the design and supply of safety-grade and non–safety-grade control devices (Man-Machine Interface Systems or MMISs), which are critical for monitoring and controlling the operational status of nuclear reactors.
The companies, in collaboration with KHNP, have successfully supplied instrumentation and control equipment and safety-grade control devices for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4. Their technological prowess has been further recognized through a KRW 50 billion contract signed with Doosan Enerbility.
In particular, Soosan ENS is successfully executing various nuclear power plant projects, including supplying locally produced safety-grade control devices (POSAFE-Q PLC) to Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2 and Saeul Units 3 and 4 by 2027. In addition, by securing regular maintenance references for APR1400, Korea’s next-generation nuclear reactor, the company is expanding its presence in both domestic and international nuclear power markets.
The company is highly regarded for its potential to supply locally produced safety-grade control devices (POSAFE-Q PLC) in future overseas nuclear power plant projects in countries such as the Czech Republic and Poland.
The relocation plan to Gyeongju is a strategic investment by Soosan Group to further strengthen its nuclear power plant equipment manufacturing capabilities and expand into the global market. Soosan ENS has also signed a memorandum of erstanding with Gyeongju City in December 2023 to successfully advance the national industrial complex for SMRs.
As a result, Gyeongju is expected to emerge as a bona fide hub for nuclear power–related industries, and Soosan Group’s recent investment is set to play a significant role in vitalizing the SMR field.
Hwang Joong-ha, Head of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province’s Investment Attraction ision, stated, “This agreement marks a significant milestone for Gyeongsangbuk-do Province’s advancement in domestic and international energy industries. We will exert all efforts to ensure that Gyeongju is established as a hub for the nuclear and renewable energy sectors.”
