As Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Pohang their efforts on developing the secondary battery industry as a leading field in the region, Dongkuk Industries held an inauguration ceremony on the 26th at its Pohang plant for the newly established production line of “nickel-plated steel sheets,” a key material for cylindrical battery cases, which has been gaining prominence as a new core business.
The ceremony was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province Investment Attraction ision Head Hwang Joong-ha , Pohang Special Advisor for Political Affairs Seo Jae-won, Dongkuk Industries Vice Chairman Jang Se-hee and CEO Lee Won-hwi, Pohang Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Na Ju-young , Pohang Steel Management Corporation President Jeon Ik-hyeon , and POSCO CEO Lee Si-woo , along with over 100 other participants.
The completion of Dongkuk Industries’ “Nickel-Plated Steel Sheet Production Plant” marks a significant achievement as Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Pohang continue to attract substantial investments from leading companies in the secondary battery sector. Notably, this development is part of ongoing efforts to build infrastructure that supports the secondary battery industry, fostering it as a core field in the region.
The collaboration between Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Pohang is expected to strengthen the secondary battery industry ecosystem and drive innovative economic growth in the region through Dongkuk Industries’ new business investments.
Dongkuk Industries has maintained stable perance through the production of “cold-rolled steel sheets,” a key material for precision automotive parts. However, in a bold move to transition into emerging growth industries such as secondary batteries, the company has invested significantly in the production of “nickel-plated steel sheets.” With an initial plan to invest KRW 88 billion, Dongkuk Industries has increased the total investment to KRW 123 billion to meet the anticipated rise in demand. This investment will enable the company to establish facilities capable of producing up to 130,000 tons of nickel-plated steel sheets annually.
Nickel-plated steel sheets are used as materials for cylindrical secondary battery cases in electric vehicles (EVs). As EV battery ats are expected to shift from prismatic to pouch and cylindrical types, this investment is seen as a crucial opportunity to enhance its competitiveness in the secondary battery market.
Lee Won-hwi, CEO of Dongkuk Industries, stated, “We will produce nickel-plated steel sheets with a strong emphasis on quality by rigorously ing raw materials and managing processes. By ersifying our business, we aim to seize the opportunities presented by the rapidly changing industrial landscape and lead future industries.”
Meanwhile, Joong-ha, Head of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province’s Investment Attraction ision, stated, “The completion of Dongkuk Industries’ secondary battery material production line marks a significant milestone in Gyeongsangbuk-do’s efforts to foster the secondary battery material and components industry, which is crucial for future industries. Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will continue to actively attract and support businesses to promote sustainable growth in the regional economy.”
