On Wednesday, August 7, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government held the ”2024․ Meeting for Cities and Counties to Attract Investment” in the meeting room of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Office, with aro 40 attendees, including representatives from city and county offices. The event was organized to share the progress made in attracting investment in the service industry, including hotels and resorts in the province, and to discuss ideas and best practices for potential site developments.
As the province seeks new opportunities for growth, having secured KRW 21 trillion in investments during its 8th administration, the provincial government has rolled up its sleeves to attract investment not only in the manufacturing-ed industries but also in the service industry with the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport, the dawn of the Yeongilman Bay era, and the successful bid to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
The province’s East Sea coast is a region with boless growth potential, being blessed with natural resources. Meanwhile, cities like Gyeongju, Andong, Yeongju, and Goryeong are treasure troves of the province’s World Heritage Sites and the birthplace of the Korean Wave. To spread the province’s historical and cultural contents globally and revitalize the local economy, attracting investment in the service industry must precede.
At the meeting, representatives from 12 city and county offices presented and discussed best practices to benchmark, including the ▴luxury hotel project at Pohang Hwanho Park, ▴the development of a multipurpose resort complex at Yeongju Dam, ▴the creation of a four-season ocean resort in Uljin-gun County, and ▴the establishment of hotels and resorts in Ulleung-gun County.
A representative from the provincial government emphasized the importance of innovative ideas that can attract travelers through small and unique accommodations that reflect the province’s distinctive culture and local character, as well as offer exclusive experiences rather than generic hotels. The official urged cities and counties facing population decline due to low birth rates and aging to remain hopeful and provide erse ideas for attracting investment in the service industry.
The provincial government also plans to establish a council for attracting investment for each service industry sector. The councils will seek advice from expert groups to enhance the province’s unique competitiveness and identify success factors, as well as continue their vigorous efforts to attract investment by organizing investment attracting briefings for the service industry in collaboration with the province’s city and county offices.
With the ideas discovered during the meeting, the province intends to visit middle-grade and large Korean tourism and leisure development enterprises, and global hotel and resort chains for the full-scale launch of activities to attract investment. As for obstacles hindering investment attraction into its cities and counties, they will be addressed through on-site regulatory innovation teams and other means.
Meanwhile, for companies investing in the service industry, the government introduced a policy to swiftly promote large-scale investments led by local communities and the private sector of actively utilizing investment fs secured to vitalize the local economy that have lower investment risks and can preserve profitability.
“In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, most jobs will be created in the service industry. The magic that will turn the most peripheral areas into ‘trendy places’ will be the service industry, such as hotels and resorts, where tourists can stay, rest, and enjoy,” said Yang Geum-hui, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province’s vice governor for Economic Planning. She added, “I hope this meeting becomes an opportunity to break the ice in attracting service industry companies, and we will do our best to achieve this together with our city and county offices.”
