- SK Siltron, leading the local semiconductor market with a string of superscale investments -

SK Siltron plans to carry out aggressive investments along with the provinces of Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi-si and officially announced that the Provincial Vice-Governor for Economic Planning Ha Dae-sung, Gumi Mayor Jang Se-yong, and SK Siltron CEO Jang Yong-ho signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) that specifies the establishment of more facilities for silicon semiconductor wafer production worth KRW 1 trillion.

With this MOU, SK Siltron will invest KRW 1.495 trillion in the Third National Industrial Complex to establish 300 mm (12″) silicon wafer production facilities in a 42,716 m2 land by 2024 for a superscale project that will generate 1,000 jobs.

Followed by its signing of an MOU for the KRW 190 billion investment in the extension of silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor wafers, the up-and-coming next-generation powered semiconductor production plant within Gumi Plant 2, in November last year, SK Siltron will be presenting yet another gift that will give hope to Gumi’s citizens troubled by the series of breakaways of large corporations from the city.

SK Siltron possesses wafer production technology, designated as a core national technology and selected as the “2022 Global Top Specialty” by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. With its recognized and outstanding technology, SK Siltron produces 300 mm (12″) and 200 mm (8″) wafers.
As of 2021, SK Siltron ranks third in the market for 300 mm wafers, the key product manufactured by the company preferred by integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), and fifth in the global wafer market share. With this investment, the company aims to be the top global supplier in the 300 mm wafer market.

Befitting its name as the major electronics city in South Korea, Gumi, Gyeongbuk, is laden with semiconductor manufacturers. Led by SK Siltron, Gumi is home to many semiconductor companies, such as Magnachip, Worldex, WONIK QnC, CoorsTek Korea, Fluoro Tech, Korea Expressway Corporation, Daejin Machinery Company, etc. The province is expected to serve as the hub of South Korea’s semiconductor industry, and its evolution into one will accelerate with the superscale investment by SK Siltron.

Meanwhile, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province points out that the K-semiconductor belt announced by the government last year es its strategy on the metropolitan area, but the belt ends in the Chungcheong-do region, hence considered insufficient for other regional areas. Thus, the province plans to expand the K-semiconductor belt by composing the ecosystem of the wide-band-gap semiconductor that has emerged as a solution to the demands for enhanced power efficiency, power density, and prolonged battery life for the existing industry, with a  on the Gyeongbuk region.

“I believe this investment will be the catalyst that will explosively upgrade Gumi City, which boosted South Korea’s electronic industry to the next level,” Vice-Governor for Economic Planning Ha Dae-sung stated. “We will  our administrative competency to attract semiconductor companies in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, to develop it into a K-semiconductor belt hub.”
