Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MoU) with Wonik QnC Corporation for a manufacturing plant for materials and parts used in semiconductor and display products. The signing ceremony took place on October 14 at the Situation Room on Gumi City Hall’s third floor, with Governor Lee Chul-woo, Gumi Mayor Jang Se-yong, Wonik QnC CEO Im Chang-bin, and Gyeongsangbuk-do Council members in attendance.
The company’s KRW 80 billion investment in the new 83,000m2 plant in Gumi High Tech Valley is expected to create 250 new jobs throughout its construction from 2021 to 2024.
Wonik QnC manufactures quartz, ceramics, lamps, and cleaning products for semiconductors and displays. The new investment is for the manufacturing of quartz for the semiconductor wafer production process.
*Quartz is the generic name for minerals composed of silicon oxide. It is used as a transport container to protect semiconductor wafers from foreign matter.
The manufacturer’s investment decision is aimed at preemptively responding to the expected increase in global demand for quartz, which is driven by the recent boom of the semiconductor industry, while creating synergy with the company’s three existing sites in Gumi.
Foed in 1983, Wonik QnC is one of Gumi’s leading local businesses. With overseas branches in Taiwan, the United States, China, and other countries, the middle-standing company supplies semiconductor materials to large local and international companies, including Samsung, SK Hynix. It employs 1,980 employees in Korea alone and reported KRW 525.6 billion in total sales and KRW 41.2 billion in operating profit for 2020.
The present company results from a split-off in 2003, wherein the company sought to enhance business specialization, management efficiency, and transparency. The resulting company was originally named Wonik Quartz, but was later changed to Wonik QnC.
In July 2020, Wonik QnC made a momentous leap as a semiconductor materials/parts manufacturer by acquiring the quartz and ceramics wing of Momentive Perance Materials, a semiconductor (raw) materials producer in the United States.
Gumi High Tech Valley, which will host the new plant, is located within a 7km radius, or a 15-minute drive from Gunwi and Uiseong, where the scheduled site of the new Daegu Gyeongbuk Airport is located. The outstanding accessibility is expected to elevate its standing as a promising hinterland industrial complex.
The transportation infrastructure of the complex is also expected to greatly benefit from the expansion of a wide-area transportation network including the Gyeongbu, Jungang, Sangju-Yeongcheon, and Jungbunaeryuk Expressways as well as connecting railroads and expressways to the new airport.
In his greetings, Governor Lee Chul-woo said, “Gumi is a highly accessible area with an airport, railroads, and transportation networks connected to all corners. It is an optimal investment destination for high tech materials and parts companies creating high added values.”
