Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju-si will attract companies that produce “high-purity lithium hydroxide” powder, a key material for secondary battery cathode, to expand the value chain of secondary battery materials to Gyeongju-si and provide an opportunity for the integration of related industries.
Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju-si announced on the 23rd that Gangwon Energy Co., Ltd. and Gyeongju-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) with Ha Dae-sung, Deputy Governor of Economic Affairs of Gyeonsangbuk-do Province; Joo Nak-young, Gyeongju Mayor; and Shin Jin-yong, CEO of Gangwon Energy Co., Ltd. to build a secondary battery cathode material production plant.
Through the investment agreement, Gangwon Energy Co., Ltd. will invest KRW 39.5 billion to build a high-purity lithium hydroxide powder production plant and create 115 new jobs.
Gangwon Energy Co., Ltd. is an affiliate of Pyeongsan Group (PSM), which has excellent competitiveness in the forging business d in Busan, and plans to build a high-purity lithium hydroxide manufacturing facility and invest in Gyeongju-si as a new business d on existing secondary battery equipment and engineering technology.
Meanwhile, Pohang-si, where large-scale investments in secondary battery materials such as EcoPro and POSCO Chemical are concentrated, continues to invest in Gyeongju-si, and secondary battery material industries accumulate and spread in the southeastern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Shin Jin-yong, CEO of Gangwon Energy Co., Ltd., said, “We have entered the secondary battery material field to ersify the group business centered on steel and forging and have decided to invest in Gyeongju-si, which has a well-equipped infrastructure for the anode material industry.“
Ha Dae-sung, deputy governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, said, “This investment is meaningful as an investment showing that the secondary battery industry, which has been strategically attracted to Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, is spreading to Gyeongju-si.“ He added, “I am confident that Gangwon Energy Co., Ltd. of PSM, which is constantly changing d on the steel industry, will actively support the material industry of secondary batteries in Gyeongju-si.”
