Sangju City has transed into a new hub for Gyeongsangbuk-do Province’s rechargeable battery material industry with a series of investments made by SK Group.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Sangju City signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) for the extension of rechargeable batteries’ silicon anode material production plants by SK Materials Group 14 (hereinafter “SKMG14”). The signing was attended by Provincial Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Sangju Mayor
Kang Young-seok, and SKMG14 CEO Park Ki-seon at Sangju City Hall’s room on the 31st.
The investment aims to take preemptive responses against the expanding battery market, and SKMG14 plans to make additional investments of KRW 250 billion by 2027 to continue expanding the silicon anode material production plant.
Last September, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Sangju City also signed an MOU with SK Materials and SKMG14 for a KRW 850 billion investment. This series of investments is expected to total KRW 1.1 trillion and generate 200 new jobs, making a significant contribution to solidifying Sangju as the hub of the rechargeable battery material industry and vitalizing the local economy.
SKMG14-manufactured silicon anode materials will have higher energy density and efficiency than existing graphite materials, thereby not only increasing the battery capacity by 4–5 times but also doubling the charging speed, making it a new technology set to bring significant innovation to the battery market.
SKMG14 announced that the plan, initialized in January 2022, will be releasing 2,000 t (for 200,000 electric vehicles) of silicon anode materials to the global market in the first half of 2023. The company will continue to invest in expanding production facilities to secure global competitiveness.
Meanwhile, with the investment of SKMG14, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Sangju City will create an industrial complex specializing in rechargeable battery parts in the entire Cheongni Industrial Complex area to attract upstream and downstream industries and develop Sangju into the locus of the K-battery industry.
“With the large-scale investment of SKMG14, the rechargeable battery material industry in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, which connects Pohang, Gumi, and Sangju, has gained even greater global competitiveness,” Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Governor Lee Cheol-woo said. “We will actively support companies that invested in the area to grow into top global establishments that can support the K-battery industry, which will dominate the global market.”
