Gyeongsangbuk-do and Pohang-si are consolidating Pohang-si’s status as leaders in the K-battery industry by ersifying the city’s industrial structure traditionally famous for its steel industry.

On December 9, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Pohang-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) with ECOPRO Group for an additional plant for secondary lithium battery materials. The signing ceremony was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Pohang-si Mayor Lee Gang-deok, and ECOPRO CEO Lee Dong-chae.

er the MOU, ECOPRO agreed to invest KRW 500 billion in a new cathode material plant with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year. The plant, which will be built on a 138,000 m2 area in Yeongilman 4th General Industrial Complex by 2026, is expected to create 300 new jobs.

The cathode material is one of the four key materials used in batteries. It determines the perance and capacity of a battery and accounts for aro 40% of the manufacturing cost. The precursor is an intermediate material for the cathode material, manufactured by mixing nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum, and other materials. An increase in cathode production means an increase in precursor demand.

ECOPRO Group was foed in 1998 by the current CEO Lee Dong-chae, The CEO’s interest in climate and environment began when he read about the news coverage of the Kyoto Protocol, which represents the signatories’ agreement on greenhouse gas reduction. As such, the group pursues two strands of business: the environment business led by ECOPROHN, which split off from the holding company last May, and the battery material industry led by ECOPRO BM and other subsidiaries.

Lee left his job as an accountant to start an environment business and acquired the necessary expertise and know-how through numerous trials and errors. His company expanded into the battery material sector by winning a battery electrolyte supply contract from Cheil Industries (currently merged into Samsung SDI).

ECOPRO’s battery material business leaped when Cheil Industries assigned its cathode material business to the group as part of the latter’s restructuring efforts. The change ed ECOPRO to access the precursor sector and contributed to the group’s growth into a global cathode material producer.

ECOPRO is currently pursuing a battery cathode full-cycle system project on a 330,000 m2 area in Yeongilman Industrial Complex in Pohang-si.

er this “Eco Battery Pohang Campus” project, the group will invest a staggering KRW 1.7 trillion by 2025 to build an industry cluster. The cluster will encompass the full cycle of battery production, including extraction of the necessary materials by ECOPRO CNG, cathode material production by ECOPRO BM, precursor production by ECOPRO GEM, lithium processing by ECOPRO Innovation, and research and development efforts.

In 2008, ECOPRO became the first company to successfully commercialize the high-nickel cathode material. It is the only company that produces the high-nickel NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) cathode material and the NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) cathode material worldwide. It has the second-largest share in the global NCA cathode market and is the top producer of cathode materials in Korea (59,000 tons per year).

ECOPRO BM, one of the group’s subsidiaries, reported a compo annual growth rate (CAGR) of 70% over the last five years. With a net worth of KRW 7,185.2 billion as of September 7, it ranks third in the KOSDAQ (Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) market.
ECOPRO’s fast growth and massive investments were made possible by its preemption of various trillion-won contracts and investments from large and promising corporations in and outside of Korea.
