Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) for a hydrogen fuel cell power generation complex within the High-Tech Valley in Gumi. The signing ceremony was held at the Gumi City Hall Conference Room on July 6, 2021, and attendees included Gyeongsangbuk-do Vice Governor for Economic Planning Ha Dae-Sung, Gumi Mayor Jang Se-yong, VT GMP CEO Kang Seung-gon, KJ Green Energy President Kim Hak-bong, Korea Western Power Vice President Song Jae-sub, Mirae Asset Energy Infra Asset Management CEO and Vice Chairman Jung Sang-ki, SK ecoplant Vice President Lee Wang-jae, and members of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Council and Gumi City Council.

The MOU will see an investment of KRW 601.5 billion in the Gumi Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generation Complex, a 90 MW power generation complex to be built on a 16,530 m2 area within the Gumi High-Tech Valley. With a scheduled operating life of 20 years, the complex will produce 750 GW of electricity yearly, which is sufficient to power 250,000 4-member households.
The complex is expected to serve as a stepping stone for further power infrastructure development in the future, aimed at preventing power shortage and attracting high-tech businesses in the High-Tech Valley.

Hydrogen fuel cells generate power by causing reactions between hydrogen from liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oxygen collected from the atmosphere. The hydrogen fuel cell energy business is one of the prime examples of green, new, and renewable energy industries. With high efficiency and no exhaust gas, clean energy production facilities utilizing hydrogen fuel cells have been installed in urban locations such as Mapo and Jamsil Lotte World Tower in Seoul for safe and green operation. Unlike photovoltaic or wind power generation, hydrogen fuel cells offer the benefit of producing electricity anytime in any environment.

Furthermore, the areas surroing the power plant will receive special subsidies totaling KRW 9 billion and KRW 30 million in basic subsidies per year. The construction project is also expected to boost the local economy by creating jobs for the local workforce.

Vice Governor Ha Dae-sung commented, “I hope that the construction of the hydrogen fuel cell power plant will help us build a stable power supply system in the region and boost investments in high-tech businesses in the Gumi High-Tech Valley.”
He added, “Gyeongsangbuk-do will dedicate full efforts to host outstanding businesses through business-friendly administration, thereby creating jobs and boosting the local economy.”
