Primary Care Facilities Primary Care Facilities: Clinics such as general practice clinic, dentist, oriental medical clinic that mainly cares for outpatients.
Secondary Care Facilities Hospitals with various departments that can accommodate up to 30 patients.
Tertiary Care Facilities General hospitals with various departments that can accommodate up to 100 patients.

* In principle, patients are supposed to go to primary and secondary care facilities first but emergency patients are exceptions.

General procedure of treatment

Treatments are carried out in the following order : (1) to submit application, (2) to wait near the window of corresponding medical department, (3) upon being called, to get diagnosed or treated at the treatment room, (4) after treatment, to pay treatment fee and to receive prescription, and (5) to submit prescription to the pharmacy to purchase medicines.

  • Health Center : Medical office operated by the government : basic disease treatment, medical checkup, vaccination and providing basic medicine for free or inexpensive price.

How to Purchase Medicines

In Korea, SDP (Separation of Dispensing and Prescription) is practiced. Therefore, doctors'prescriptions are required to purchase medicines from pharmacies. However, medicines for simple symptoms such as headache and indigestion can be purchased from pharmacies without prescriptions.

Standard Children Vaccination Schedule

  • BCG : vaccination within four weeks after birth
  • Hepatitis type B : HBIG and vaccination for Hepatitis type B should be inoculated within 12 hours after birth followed by 2nd and 3rd vaccination in 1 month and 6 month each if pregnant mother was Hepatitis type B surface antigen positive.
  • DTap : Dtap combined vaccination
  • Td/Tdap : Additional vaccination at the age of 11~12 is recommended (Tdap is planned to be covered from 2012)
  • Polio : 3rd vaccination need to be inoculated between 6 month and 18 month after birth and DTap-IPV combined vaccination can be inoculated.
    *Dtap-IPV : DTap-IPV combined vaccination can be inoculated instead of DRap, IPV vaccination in 2, 4, 6month after birth, at the aged 4~6. In this case, same brand should be used for first 3 vaccination and DTap vaccination that are inoculated between 15~18 month can inoculated regardless of the brand.
  • Measles : MMR vaccination can be inoculated in 6~11 month after birth if there is a measles breakout, but additional MMR vaccination need to be inoculated in 12month after birth.
  • Japanese Encephalitis (Salk Vaccine) : 1st and 2nd vaccination need to be inoculated in 12~23 month after birth with interval of 7~30days. 3rd vaccination can be inoculated 12month after the second vaccination.
  • Influenza (Salk Vaccine) : Annual vaccination for 6 month ~ 59 month old infant and first vaccination should be inoculated 2 times with 4 weeks intervals and after that 1time per year.
  • Influenza (Sabin Vaccine) : Vaccination can be inoculated in 24 month after birth and first vaccination should be inoculated 2 times with 4 weeks intervals and after that 1 time per year.
  • Typhoid : Limited vaccination is recommended in case of contacting with typhoid carrier or traveling to typhoid breakout areas.
